Those of us who travel need hotels. It's just the way it is, but you shouldn't have to tolerate substandard service. You should use these suggestions to get the best out of your hotel experience.
1. Avoid taking a room near an lift, or near an ice machine, or other type of vending machine. Everything might appear perfect before you go to bed. However, with the room darkened you'll start to notice the movements and hear the smallest noises all the way until morning.

***** 5 star hotels - simply sumptuous luxury.
**** 4 star hotels - still quite magnificent.
*** 3 star hotels - probably the quality of hotel most of us use.
** 2 star hotels - still acceptable, but with less frills.
* 1 star hotels - the economy range. | 2. If a room can't be found removed from outside sounds, don't forget to pack suitable earplugs prior to departing. It's possible to get by by shoving soft paper inside your ears, but a proper pair of earplugs will work much better and give a more natural feeling, giving you a far superior nights sleep.
3. Take a close look at the alarm clock in your room to make sure it has been turned off. Sometimes earlier hotel visitors whose idea of funny is not yours set the alarm clock in the hotel room to an unforgiveably early hour for a bit of fun. It may seem funny to them at the time, but you wont laugh at 4am as you suddenly come awake in a strange darkened room with an alarm clock ringing loudly!
4. Before getting into bed for the night, remember the way from your cosy bed to the bathroom, and be clear that the route is not cluttered up with unnecessary things. If a trip to the bathroom become necessary later you normally won't find it difficult to get off to sleep again. But you're likely to stay wide awake should you bang your foot on the heel of one of your shoes left lying somewhere between the bed and the bathroom.
5. Be sure that the blinds of your room windows are tightly shut. An early morning shaft of sunlight hitting your closed eyelids through a gap in the drapes will bring you awake much faster than you might believe. It's always the closing moments of your sleep that are the best. Be careful not to interfere with those precious moments.
However, let's bear in mind it's your life, and you can do what you like. However my ideas on living in hotels are useful to me out on the road when hotels are a necessity, and with that in mind you could do worse than try them.
