Travellers require hotels. It's the way it's always been, but there's no reason why you should suffer less than acceptable service. Here are a few tips to get a really good deal from your hotel stay.
1. Dont get a room close to an elevator, or in the vicinity of an ice maker, or any other kind of machinery. Everything might appear perfect prior to going to bed. However, when the lights are out you will find it impossible to ignore the vibrations and become aware of the tiniest of noises right through until daybreak.

You can improvise by stuffing soft paper in your ears, but a proper pair of earplugs will work much better and provide better comfort, allowing you to have a vastly better overnight slumber.
3. Take a close look at the alarm clock in your room to create sure it has been turned off. Sometimes former hotel visitors with a strange sense of humour set the room alarm clock to a ridiculous time in the middle of the night as their idea of a joke. They probably think it hilarious as they do it, however, it won't be you laughing uncontrolably at 3am when you wake up in a strange darkened room as an alarm clock making a deafening noise to waken the dead!
4. Prior to slipping between the sheets, bear in mind the route from your bed to the toilet, and be certain that there are no obstruction in the way. Should you find the need to visit the bathroom later you normally won't find it difficult to get off to sleep again. But you're likely to stay wide awake should you bang your foot on some hard object left lying between you and the toilet door.
5. Check carefully that the curtains covering the windows are fully closed. Bright sunlight in the morning focussing on your face through a hole in the blinds will bring you awake much faster than you really want to know. Of course, it's usually the final moments of slumber that are the best. Be careful not to interfere with those precious moments.
