Travellers need hotels. It's just the way it is, but there's no reason why you should suffer service that's not good enough. You can use this advice to get the best out of your hotel stay.
1. You should not choose a room near by an elevator, or anywhere near an ice machine, or other type of vending machine. You may be satisfied with how things are prior to going to bed. However, with the room darkened you will find it impossible to ignore the vibrations and become aware of barely audible sounds all night long.

It's possible to get by by ramming soft paper in your ears, but a proper pair of earplugs are like to have more effect and feel much more comfortable, giving you a much better overnight slumber.
3. Check your hotel room alarm clock to produce sure it has been turned off. It has been known that former guests with a strange sense of humour set the room alarm clock to a time in the 'wee small hours' for a bit of fun. It may seem funny to them at the time, but you wont laugh at 4am when you wake up and find yourself in darkness, not knowing where you are while an alarm clock clanging in your ears!
4. Before you finally bed down, don't forget the way from your cosy bed to the bathroom, and be clear that the route is not cluttered up with unnecessary things. If a trip to the bathroom become necessary later falling asleep again is often easy enough. But you're likely to stay wide awake if you stub your toe on something hard and unyielding carelessly left on the path from your bed to the bathroom.
5. Make a careful check that the drapes on each window are fully closed. Bright sunlight in the morning landing on you sleeping face through a gap in the drapes can rouse you from your dreams quicker than you'd ever think. And its often those last hours of sleep that are the best. Don't upset times such as these.
On the other hand, when all's said and done it's you that's booking the room, and you're free to make your own choices. Of course the tips I've outlined are useful to me when Im travelling and using hotels, so I recommend giving them a try.
