1. Dont get a room close to an elevator, or anywhere near an ice machine, or any other kind of vending machine. Everything might appear perfect before you go to bed. But afterwards when the lights are out you'll become aware of the movements and become aware of the smallest noises all night long.

2. If a suitable room can't be obtained that's not close to annoying sounbds, remember to bring along some earplugs prior to departing. It's possible to get by by stuffing tissue paper in your ears, but an approved couple of earplugs will work much better and give a more natural feeling, providing you with a much better nights sleep.

3. Examine the alarm clock where you're staying to make sure it has been turned off. Sometimes prior hotel visitors whose idea of funny is not yours set the alarm clock in the hotel room to a ridiculous time in the middle of the night as their idea of a joke. They probably think it hilarious as they do it, but you wont laugh at 4am when you come awake all of a sudden and find yourself in darkness, not knowing where you are while an alarm clock making a deafening noise to waken the dead!

4. Before getting into bed for the night, bear in mind the direct path from the bed to where the toilet is, and be clear that the route is not cluttered up with unnecessary things. Should you find the need to visit the bathroom later you normally won't find it difficult to get off to sleep again. But it wont be so easy if you injure your toes on some hard object left lying somewhere on the route between toilet and bed.

5. Be sure that the blinds of your room windows are fully closed. A glare of sun hitting your closed eyelids through a crack in the curtains will bring you awake much faster than you'd ever think. And its often the closing moments of your sleep that are the best. Don't upset those precious moments.
