2. If a room can't be found removed from outside sounds, bear in mind to bring along a pair of earplugs prior to setting out. You can get by by shoving soft paper within your ears, but a proper pair of earplugs will be much more effective and give a more natural feeling, giving you a much better overnight slumber.

3. Check your hotel room alarm clock to make sure it has been turned off. On occasion prior guests whose idea of funny is not yours set the alarm clock in the hotel room to an unforgiveably early hour for a bit of fun. Probably, they find it most amusing when they do it, but I'll bet that when it rings at 5am, you won't laugh as you suddenly come awake in a strange darkened room with an alarm clock making a deafening noise to waken the dead!

4. Prior to slipping between the sheets, keep in mind the route from your bed to the toilet, and be clear that the route is not cluttered up with unnecessary things. If you need to go to the toilet in the middle of the night you normally won't find it difficult to get off to sleep again. But you're likely to stay wide awake if you stub your toe on the side of a shoe carelessly left between you and the toilet door.

5. Be sure that the blinds of your room windows have no little gaps in them. An early morning shaft of sunlight landing on you sleeping face through a crack in the curtains can awaken you more easily than you'd care to know. Of course, it's usually the closing moments of your sleep that rank way above the rest. Don't upset those precious moments.
