But the next thing you'll know when the lights are out you will feel the vibrations and hear every little sound all the way until morning.

2. If a suitable room can't be obtained removed from outside sounds, remember to pack some earplugs before departing. You can improvise by shoving tissue paper in your ears, but a proper pair of earplugs will be much more effective and provide better comfort, allowing you to have a greatly improved rest for the night.

3. Check your hotel room alarm clock to create sure it has been turned off. On occasion earlier hotel visitors whose idea of funny is not yours set the room alarm clock to a ridiculous time in the middle of the night for a bit of fun. They probably think it hilarious as they do it, however, it won't be you laughing uncontrolably at 3am when you come awake all of a sudden with pitch darkness all around in an unfamiliar place as an alarm clock making a deafening noise to waken the dead!

4. Prior to slipping between the sheets, keep in mind the route from your bed to the toilet, and be clear that the route is not cluttered up with unnecessary things. If a trip to the bathroom become necessary later you can usually fall asleep again with ease. But it wont be so easy should you bang your foot on some hard object left lying somewhere between the bed and the bathroom.

5. Check carefully that the curtains covering the windows are fully closed. A glare of sun focussing on your face through a hole in the blinds will bring you awake much faster than you'd ever think. You know it's the closing moments of your sleep that have no equal. Be careful not to interfere with those precious moments.

On the other hand, at the end of the day its your hotel experience, and you're free to make your own choices. Of course the tips I've outlined always help me when Im travelling and using hotels, so I recommend giving them a try.
