1. You should not choose a room close to an elevator, or near an ice machine, or other type of machinery. It may seem fine before you go to bed. However, when the lights are out you'll start to notice the vibrations and hear barely audible sounds throughout the night.

***** 5 star hotels - simply sumptuous luxury.

**** 4 star hotels - still quite magnificent.

*** 3 star hotels - probably the quality of hotel most of us use.

** 2 star hotels - still acceptable, but with less frills.

* 1 star hotels - the economy range.

2. If a room can't be found removed from outside sounds, remember to pack suitable earplugs before starting out. You can get by by shoving soft paper inside your ears, however, a correctly made product of earplugs will be much more effective and provide better comfort, giving you a far superior overnight slumber.

3. Take a close look at the alarm clock in your room to make sure it has been turned off. Sometimes former guests who have a wierd idea of what's funny set the room alarm clock to an unforgiveably early hour for a bit of fun. They probably think it hilarious as they do it, but I'll bet that when it rings at 5am, you won't laugh as you suddenly come awake and find yourself in darkness, not knowing where you are while an alarm clock ringing loudly!

4. Before getting into bed for the night, bear in mind the direct path from the bed to where the toilet is, and be clear that the route is not cluttered up with unnecessary things. If you need to go to the toilet in the middle of the night you can usually fall asleep again with ease. But you're likely to stay wide awake if you injure your toes on some hard object carelessly left somewhere on the route between toilet and bed.

5. Be sure that the blinds covering the windows have no little gaps in them. A ray of sunshine hitting your closed eyelids through a gap in the drapes can awaken you more easily than you might believe. Of course, it's usually the final moments of slumber that stand superior. Be careful not to interfere with times such as these.

However, when all's said and done it's your life, and you can do what you like. Of course my way of coping with a hotel room have kept me in good stead when I'm on the move and staying in hotel rooms, so I recommend giving them a try.
