Those of us who travel need hotels. It's the way it's always been, but you dont have to put up with less than acceptable service. Here are a few tips to get the best out of your hotel experience.
1. Dont get a room next to an elevator, or near by an ice maker, or any other kind of machinery. You may be satisfied with how things are prior to going to bed. But afterwards with the room darkened you will find it impossible to ignore the tremblings and hear the smallest noises throughout the night.

***** 5 star hotels - simply sumptuous luxury.
**** 4 star hotels - still quite magnificent.
*** 3 star hotels - probably the quality of hotel most of us use.
** 2 star hotels - still acceptable, but with less frills.
* 1 star hotels - the economy range. | 2. If a room can't be found away from external noises, don't forget to stow away a pair of earplugs prior to setting out. You can get by by ramming toilet paper within your ears, but an approved couple of earplugs will work much better and give a more natural feeling, allowing you to have a vastly better nights sleep.
3. Examine the alarm clock where you're staying to make sure it has been turned off. On occasion prior hotel visitors whose idea of funny is not yours set the room alarm clock to an unforgiveably early hour for a bit of fun. They probably think it hilarious as they do it, however, it won't be you laughing uncontrolably at 3am when you come awake all of a sudden and find yourself in darkness, not knowing where you are as an alarm clock ringing loudly!
4. Before you finally bed down, keep in mind the route from your bed to the toilet, and create sure the path is completely clear. If a trip to the bathroom become necessary later you normally won't find it difficult to get off to sleep again. However, you'll find it much more difficult should you bang your foot on something hard and unyielding left lying on the path from your bed to the bathroom.
5. Make a careful check that the drapes covering the windows are tightly shut. Bright sunlight in the morning landing on you sleeping face through a gap in the drapes will bring you awake much faster than you'd care to know. And its often those last hours of sleep that stand superior. Do nothing that might spoil times such as these.
Of course, at the end of the day it's your life, and you can do what you like. Of course the tips I've outlined have kept me in good stead when I'm on the move and staying in hotel rooms, and with that in mind you could do worse than try them.
