2. If a room can't be found that's not close to annoying sounbds, remember to pack suitable earplugs before departing. You can improvise by putting toilet paper in your ears, but a proper pair of earplugs will work much better and provide better comfort, giving you a vastly better rest for the night.

3. Check your hotel room alarm clock to produce sure it has been turned off. It has been known that prior hotel visitors with a strange sense of humour set the room alarm clock to a ridiculous time in the middle of the night as their idea of a joke. It may seem funny to them at the time, however, it won't be you laughing uncontrolably at 3am when you wake up with pitch darkness all around in an unfamiliar place while an alarm clock clanging in your ears!

4. Before you finally bed down, bear in mind the way from your cosy bed to the bathroom, and be certain that there are no obstruction in the way. Should you find the need to visit the bathroom later falling asleep again is often easy enough. But you're likely to stay wide awake if you stub your toe on the side of a shoe left lying somewhere on the route between toilet and bed.

5. Check carefully that the curtains on each window are fully closed. An early morning shaft of sunlight hitting your closed eyelids through a gap in the drapes will bring you awake much faster than you'd ever think. And its often those last hours of sleep that rank way above the rest. Be careful not to interfere with such a special time.
