1. Dont get a room anywhere near an elevator, or in the vicinity of an ice maker, or other type of vending machine. You may be satisfied with how things are prior to going to bed. However, with the room darkened you will feel the tremblings and hear the least noticeable noise all night long.

You can get by by ramming toilet paper in your ears, however, a correctly made product of earplugs will work much better and provide better comfort, allowing you to have a greatly improved rest for the night.
3. Take a close look at the alarm clock in your room to create sure it has been turned off. Every so often previous guests with a strange sense of humour set the alarm clock in the hotel room to a ridiculous time in the middle of the night for a practical joke. Probably, they find it most amusing when they do it, but you wont laugh at 4am as you suddenly come awake in a strange darkened room with an alarm clock ringing loudly!
4. Before you finally bed down, remember the route from your bed to the toilet, and be clear that the route is not cluttered up with unnecessary things. If you need to go to the toilet in the middle of the night you can usually fall asleep again with ease. But it wont be so easy if you stub your toe on the heel of one of your shoes left lying on the path from your bed to the bathroom.
5. Be sure that the blinds covering the windows are tightly shut. An early morning shaft of sunlight penetrating your sweet dreams through a crack in the curtains can rouse you from your dreams quicker than you'd ever think. You know it's the final moments of slumber that rank way above the rest. Be careful not to interfere with times such as these.
Of course, let's bear in mind it's your life, and what you do is up to you. Of course my way of coping with a hotel room are useful to me out on the road when hotels are a necessity, so I'm recommending those strategies to you.
