It may seem funny to them at the time, but I'll bet that when it rings at 5am, you won't laugh when you come awake all of a sudden in a strange darkened room while an alarm clock ringing loudly!

4. Before you finally bed down, bear in mind the direct path from the bed to where the toilet is, and be clear that the route is not cluttered up with unnecessary things. If you need to go to the toilet in the middle of the night falling asleep again is often easy enough. But you're likely to stay wide awake if you stub your toe on some hard object discarded somewhere between the bed and the bathroom.

5. Check carefully that the curtains of your room windows are fully closed. Bright sunlight in the morning landing on you sleeping face through a crack in the curtains will bring you awake much faster than you really want to know. Of course, it's usually those last hours of sleep that are the best. Be careful not to interfere with such a special time.

But remember, at the end of the day it's your life, and you can do what you like. Of course the tips I've outlined always help me when Im travelling and using hotels, and with that in mind you could do worse than try them.
